Updating Our National Park Book

Updating Our National Park Book

I’ve come to understand why successful authors are fulltime writers.  Writing a book is a fulltime job.  Both Shelly and I already have careers which consume more than forty hours of our week.  No worries though.  Our book is about our passion. When I get the chance to write, i do so with enthusiasm.  Still, the pressures of adulthood have made writing time a precious commodity. Continue reading

Cheers to the Switchback Kids

Cheers to the Switchback Kids

In July 2014 we received an email from a young man named Cole Donelson.   He said that he and his wife Elizabeth were planning a year long trip to all 59 of the National Parks.  He expressed a bit of surprise that someone was already on such a journey–especially someone from their hometown of Kansas City.  He asked us if we would like to meet them to share a few ideas.  We agreed, but were a bit skeptical.  We had already been traveling the National Parks for three months.  We learned quickly how challenging the travel was and how expensive such a trip is.  We were also aware of a dozen or so people that had attempted to do such a trip and had flamed out along the way.  We first met Cole and Elizabeth at a coffee shop in Parkville, Missouri. Are All National Parks Worth Return Visits?

Are All National Parks Worth Return Visits?

Let us say upfront that we would return to any of the 59 National Parks if the circumstances were right.  All of them are special.  All of them have unique things to see and do.  All of them are an important part of our heritage and deserve to be protected for future generations.  With that said, our circumstances have changed. Never again will we attempt a year long sprint to see all of anything.  It is an expensive and exhausting enterprise.  It was also worth every bit of the effort we made to do so.  Are all of the National Parks worth return visits?  For us at least, the answer is no.  Continue reading

#NPS100RoadTrip, The Itinerary

#NPS100RoadTrip, The Itinerary

When I look at the list below it seems daunting.  Our short four day trip to Nebraska for the 100th birthday of the National Park Service evolved quickly to an impossibly  ambitious nine day, twelve site road trip.  We are visiting four big states too–out west.  We estimate our #NPS100RoadTrip will require at least 3000 miles of driving.  With kids. Lydia’s National Park Road Trip

Editor’s Note:  We’ve met so many terrific people in person and via social media that love the National Parks as much as we do.  Those who enjoy taking road trips to many National Parks at a time (like us) we’ve come to refer to as #ParkNuts.  Our young friend Lydia is one of the nuttiest.  She is also one of the best.  We think you will enjoy her account of her most recent National Park adventure.

 Lydia’s National Park Road Trip

Hello all,

My name is Lydia and I connected with Don and Shelly (my national park enthusiast idols) last fall before I made a trip to visit some national parks. Similar to Don and Shelly, it is my goal to visit all 59 national parks. Although I absolutely wish I could visit them all in a 59-week time frame, for now my goal is to reach them all by the time I am 30 (7+ years to go!). I If you read their post of our email correspondence last September, you will see how kind and wonderful their response to my original email was. Their advice for each park was so helpful I still cannot express enough gratitude. If you are planning a trip to any of the national parks we discussed I highly recommend taking a look at their suggestions. Seeing as I didn’t get to go to everywhere I had planned, but did end up adding some more fun national parks to my itinerary, I am going to share my adventure with you and some useful tips I learned along the way. Hopefully this will inspire you to get out and visit these awesome parks! Continue reading

7 Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures in Utah’s “Mighty Five”

Editor’s Note:  Our friends Elizabeth and Cole Donelson enjoy getting off-the-beaten-path at the National Parks.  We are proud to share their story about doing just that at Utah’s Mighty Five.  We are also proud of them for what they are accomplishing on their quest to see all 59 National Parks.  Enjoy.

Notre Voyage Au Canada

Notre Voyage Au Canada

About three months of our 2017 adventure will be spent north of the border. When we leave North Cascades National Park, Washington we will head to Canada.   Between Shelly and I, we have been to Canada at least thirty times.  Heck we went to Canada three times during our 59 National Parks tour.  Still our incursions into Canada have always been around the edges—nothing in depth.  We knew that the country featured French fries with gravy and cheese curds. We noticed a dizzying array of taxes include the PST, GST and HST.  We were confused by the road signs which featured kilometers and French.  In spite of two brief trips to the Yukon and three Provinces we knew we had just scratched the surface of this beautiful country.

We vowed someday to correct our shallow approach.  This time we will get into the interior of the country on our Notre Voyage Au Canada.  Our trip will include several Canadian National Parks. Continue reading

Our Next Adventure Begins

Our Next Adventure Begins

We have been challenged to update our blog.  The pressures of full time jobs coupled with the time required to write a book has moved blogging down on our priority list.  We miss it and will endeavor to update our site at least twice a month.  We have not neglected, however, our plans to launch a new adventure.  We are pleased to announce our future plans today.
